What’s better than unlimited clones who feel pain every time they die? According to this weekend’s box office results, one guy who doesn’t feel pain.
That’s why you’ll find Novocaine, with a domestic premiere of $8.7 million, taking first place. And it’s the lowest box office win for a film’s debut since Magic Mike’s Last Dance took first with $8.3 million back in February 2023. So while Novocaine’s lead might not feel pain, the wallets of its producers probably will.
Novocaine can attribute its win to the fact that Mickey 17, the story of a death-frequenting clone, took in a mere $7.51 million. That’s 60% less compared to the previous weekend. And while that barely keeps it in second place, it’s not a good sign for the film, either.
Meanwhile, spy thriller Black Bag bagged third place with debut earnings of $7.5 million. Captain America: Brave New World, with a little fight left in it, earned fourth place with $5.48 million, bringing its domestic gain to $185 million. And coming in fifth place with a debut of $3.17 million, The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie ensures that there’s at least one PG-rated film in the top five.
Unfortunately, that Looney Tunes victory pushes The Last Supper down to sixth place. The Christian film earned just shy of $3 million. And a bit further down the list, new horror flick Opus quickly learned that it wouldn’t be distributor A24’s magnum opus. It barely slashed one million into its box office coffers.
