Movie Monday: ‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’ Haunts Top of Box Office, Best TV Shows to Binge Watch

8 September 20252 Mins Read

This weekend’s box office may have been described more as a “boxing office,” given Warner Bros. and Disney’s back-and-forth for the top spots this week.

The first to strike was Warner Bros. When The Conjuring: Last Rites released, it didn’t just haunt the box office—it also haunted wallets and purses. The death-filled movie (the fourth in The Conjuring franchise) took an ironically healthy lead this past weekend, coming into the possession of $83 million.

That’s a lot of money—enough that a certain former secretary of the treasury might offer up his services. Disney’s Hamilton re-released in theaters, hoping to “Blow Us All Away” with its impressive musical numbers. Though its rise to the top wasn’t exactly “Non-Stop,” it nevertheless taxed $10 million out of audiences for a respectable second place. Turns out King George was right in telling viewers, “You’ll Be Back.”

And just as Alexander Hamilton stole British cannons, Hamilton also stole second place from Warner Bros.’ Weapons. The film dropped to third this weekend by bringing in $5.37 million. Still, that raises its domestic total to $143 million and its worldwide cume to $251.5 million.

Disney’s Freakier Friday then retaliated by taking fourth place. It earned $3.2 million, which brings its domestic gross to $87.8 million. Worldwide, it has swapped $142.9 million from audience pockets to its own.

Rounding out the top five, Sony Pictures decided to hop into the ring with Caught Stealing, which was caught nabbing $3.2 million from viewers this weekend. That brings its ninth-inning earnings to $12.8 million in the U.S. and $22.2 million worldwide.

As for other new releases, Christian animation Light of the World opened in ninth place. It generated $2.4 million. Meanwhile, the graphic and vulgar Twinless found itself in 16th after generating a mere $504,000.
