The Fantastic Four aren’t about to let Galactus dominate the world, but they’re nevertheless quite content to dominate the box office—though not without some bruises along the way.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps took a healthy first place this weekend. Still, itfell hard this week, plummeting 66% in gross earnings compared to its opening weekend. It took home $40 million domestically, which brings its domestic total to just shy of $200 million. Fantastic? Well, not really: That number, so far, ranks the film as Marvel’s 29th most profitable movie (out of 37). Worldwide, the superhero flick has earned $369 million.
The movie was flanked by another group of fantastic critters—The Bad Guys 2. The DreamWorks/Universal animated sequel robbed audiences of $22.2 million in its opening week. That’s slightly less than the original film’s opening earnings ($23.9 million), but its projections remain healthy regardless. The film did marginally better internationally, taking in an additional $22.3 million.
In third place comes the series known for casting serious actors with the initials L.N. as its silly protagonists. I’m talking, of course, about The Naked Gun, which opened to $17 million domestically. Counting overseas profits, it has earned $28.5 million. Those numbers won’t make it a “Goodyear” for the movie, but it probably won’t be the worst, either.
What’s that in fourth place? It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s Superman, plummeting two box office spots faster than he did into the snow at the start of his own movie. That’s because the Symbol of Peace lost a significant piece of his profits from last week, dropping by 44%. Still, the movie added $13.9 million to its coffers, bringing its domestic earnings to $316.3 million. Its worldwide earnings rest at $551.3 million.
And in fifth place, likewise suffering a two-spot drop on account of our two debut entries, is Jurassic World Rebirth. Impressively, the movie has stayed in the top five for five weeks now. It’s looking like it might take an unfortunately placed asteroid to knock this film off our list—or, perhaps, Freakier Friday, projected to take $40 million when it releases this weekend. Rebirth gobbled up $8.7 million this week, bringing its domestic earnings to $317.6 million and its worldwide cume to $766 million.
