NBC Host Announces Cancer Diagnosis Live on Air

NBC 4 New York host Sara Gore just announced her cancer diagnosis live on air—and viewers have since flooded her with prayers on social media.

On Thursday, April 30, Gore, 49, shared the unexpected health update, as seen in a clip posted on Instagram. She also revealed that she would be taking a leave of absence from hosting Open House and New York Live to undergo treatment.

“Well, we have shared all kinds of things together on this show over the years—where to eat, what to do, what to see. But today, I want to share something a little more personal,” she began. “Which is hard for me because, you know what, because this show has never been about me. It’s about our guests, it’s about the city that we love, it’s about all of you.”

The NBC host, who has been with the network for more than 15 years, then shared, “It just felt right to tell you myself: I was recently diagnosed with breast cancer, and I’m going to be stepping away for treatment and surgery.”

Gore added, “If I didn’t say that I was a little bit scared, I’d be lying,” noting that her mother and sister have also battled breast cancer.

“I always knew I was high-risk,” she admitted. “And I always assumed this day would come. But let me tell you, you are never ready. You’re just never ready, for some reason, even when you catch it early because you’re doing everything right.”

While fighting back tears, Gore admitted the cancer diagnosis was an “emotional blow,” but that she is “exactly where I need to be, and I’m surrounded by incredible doctors and people who are taking such good care of me.”

In the comments, Gore’s followers showered her with prayers. Today co-host Craig Melvin wrote, “You got this, Sara.”

Dateline NBC correspondent Andrea Canning shared, “You’ve got this, Sara! Just imagine the other side … it will come… ❤️❤️❤️love you.”

Today in New York host Michael Gargiulo commented, “Sara .. you are an amazing brave person, and I wish you and your family the best always .. see you soon!”

NBC 4 New York host Jen Maxfield echoed, “Sending you my love and prayers. You will be back soon, but take the time to heal 🩷.”

Another Instagram user shared, “Thank you for letting us into your heart and sharing this diagnosis with us. You are a bright light that blesses our lives. You are in our prayers as you conquer this. Can’t wait until you are back 🙏🏻😊🙏🏻😊.”

Someone else wrote, “You are a remarkable person, and my family and I will be praying for your health and a speedy end to this journey you’re now on.”

Meanwhile, yet another Instagram user commented, “Sara, we love you, and we are sending you our very best for a full and speedy recovery. You are strong, and we will be praying for you. ❤️❤️❤️.”
