Fans of the far-out animated series Scavengers Reign and Common Side Effects, rejoice: Joe Bennet and Green Street Pictures are creating a new adult-focused cartoon for Netflix called Dealies, a workplace comedy about a big box superstore. Based on Green Street Pictures’ previous works, it will probably be very weird (complimentary) and a must-watch.
The logline reads, “A savant salesman. A gentle gladiator. A quiet virtuoso. A summoner of the divine. And the poor soul who hired them. All part of the staff at DEALIES, a big box store. They are masters of the delicate alchemy of trade. Prophets of enterprise. And occasionally they do some actual work.”
Bennet and Ted Travelstead will serve as the series’ showrunners, writers, and executive producers. Lisa Mierke, Alex Plapinger, James Merrill, Sean Buckelew, and Benjy Brooke will also executive produce. The company producing the show, Green Street Pictures, was co-founded by Bennet in 2020, and it has worked with talents like Mike Judge and Greg Daniels, the co-creators of King of the Hill.
While there isn’t a lot to go on for Dealies besides a teaser image and the crew, the show’s art style is quite reminiscent of Green Street Pictures’ previous work, the conspiratorial dramedy Common Side Effects. That series combined critiques of big pharma and sharp humor into a psychedelic cocktail. It ran on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim and has been renewed for a second season.
Before working on Common Side Effects, Joe Bennet and Green Street Pictures worked on Scavengers Reign, a sci-fi series that reveled in alien strangeness. It created a sense of mystery through show-don’t-tell storytelling, slowly revealing planet Vesta’s sometimes disturbing, sometimes beautiful flora and fauna. It was canceled after a single season on Max and then passed over to Netflix, where it has not been renewed, to the chagrin of people who like good things. Even if Scavengers Reign was an unfortunate one-and-done, it’s good to see that Green Street Pictures continues to find support in making smart animated works that narratively and aesthetically push boundaries.
