Netflix is heading to the coast of Western Australia for Breakers, a tense new psychological drama series produced by the British team behind the global smash hit Baby Reindeer. Starring Antony Starr (The Boys) and D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai (Reservation Dogs), here is everything we know so far about the series now confirmed for release in 2026.
Announced as part of Netflix’s major ANZ (Australia & New Zealand) slate reveal in February 2026, Breakers represents a significant investment in Australian storytelling. It marks the first time a Netflix series has been filmed in the state of Western Australia. The project was first unveiled in January 2026; however, we had been tracking it since mid-to-late 2025, and Deadline eventually broke the news exclusively (alongside TUDUM – What’s on Netflix was not included). It had been developed under the working title of Red Bluff.
The series comes from Clerkenwell Films, the production company responsible for the Emmy-winning Netflix hit Baby Reindeer and the expansive teen drama The End of the F*ing World. It is produced in partnership with BBC Studios Australia Productions.
The series is written by Pete Jackson, who previously wrote for Somewhere Boy. Directing duties are split between Mary Nighy (Industry, Alice, Darling) and Ng Choon Ping.
Executive Producers include Gavin O’Grady, Petra Fried, and Wim De Greef for Clerkenwell Films, alongside writer Pete Jackson and star Antony Starr. Filming took place in Margaret River and on the Busselton beachfront in Western Australia, locations famous for their world-class surf breaks and rugged coastlines. The production was supported by the WA Government through the Screenwest Western Australian Production Attraction Incentive. The majority of the filming is taking place in Perth, Australia.
What is the plot of Breakers?
Described as a “psychological drama” and a “thriller,” Breakers explores themes of power, loyalty, and belonging within a closed loop of people.
The official logline for the series is as follows:
“Two American friends backpacking through Australia stumble upon what seems like paradise in a remote surf commune. Welcomed into the tight-knit
club, they revel in the waves, freedom, and camaraderie—until they begin to sense something darker beneath the sun-soaked surface. As a member
mysteriously vanishes and the group’s rituals grow increasingly unsettling, the friends realize they’ve been drawn into a dangerous cult. Trapped
between loyalty and fear, they must uncover the truth and fight to survive before they, too, are swept under.”
Set against the backdrop of a fictional town, the story kicks off when these two friends are pulled into a close-knit surf community. However, as is often the case in this genre, the “perfect” paradise is likely hiding a darker underbelly.
Who is in the cast of Breakers?
The series features a heavy-hitting mix of international stars and established Australian talent.
Leading the cast is New Zealand actor Antony Starr, best known globally for his terrifying portrayal of Homelander in the Prime Video series The Boys and his role in Banshee. Starr plays the “charismatic but mysterious figure” leading the surf community. He also serves as an Executive Producer on the project.
Starring alongside him are a slew of young Australian local talents. Fans of Netflix’s Heartbreak High will recognize a reunion of sorts, with Yasbincek, Watson, and Townsend all featuring in the cast:
- D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai (Reservation Dogs)
- Oliver Edis
- Annabel Wolfe
- Asher Yasbincek (Heartbreak High)
- Sherry-Lee Watson (Heartbreak High)
- Brodie Townsend (Heartbreak High)
- David Howell
- Tyroe Muhafidin (The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power)
- Tom Dawson
- Lu Miller
- Eliza Learmonth
When will Breakers be released on Netflix?
Netflix has confirmed that Breakers will be released globally in 2026. That said, our intel suggests that filming will not wrap until June 2026, meaning that we’re almost certainly looking towards the very end of the year (think November/December).
We will update this preview as soon as a concrete release date and trailer are available. Are you excited for Breakers on Netflix? Let us know in the comments.
