While much of the attention for Netflix’s December TV slate will be put on Stranger Things and Emily in Paris, Playing Gracie Darling should definitely be on your radar, particularly if you’re a fan of mystery thrillers. Not everyone is going to be able to watch the series as Netflix is sharing the rights with Paramount+. Here’s what you need to know.
Set across six episodes, the show follows Joni, whose best friend Gracie vanished at 14 during a séance, an event that has haunted her ever since. Twenty-seven years later, local kids start reenacting the séance as a sinister game, and another girl disappears. To uncover the truth, Joni must finally confront what happened on that long-buried night.
Filmed across New South Wales, Australia, the series is written by Miranda Nation and Anya Beyersdorf, directed by Jonathan Brough, produced by Curio Pictures, and executive produced by Jo Porter and Rachel Gardner.
The cast for the series includes:
- Morgana O’Reilly (Housebound) as Joni Grey
- Kristina Bogic (Netflix’s upcoming series The Body) as Gracie Darling
- Rudi Dharmalingam (Wakefield) as Jay Rajeswaran
- Chloe Brink (The Twelve) as Mina Grey
- Harriet Walter (Sense and Sensibility, Succession) as Pattie Grey
- Stella Miller as Lulu Grey
- Saiesha Sundaralingam as Raffy Rajeswaran
- Celia Pacquola (Rosehaven) as Ruth Darling
- Anne Tenney (The Castle) as Moira Darling
As mentioned, the series has scored some rather mixed reviews from critics thus far, although they’re scattered around the web, given its limited distribution thus far. The Guardian gave it a 2-star rating, stating the series is “well-acted but overall feels fusty and antiquated.” They continued, stating that among all the performances, Morgana O’Reilly stood out.
Where will Playing Gracie Darling stream on Netflix?
As alluded to above, Playing Gracie Darling is not a global Netflix Original title.
Deadline’s Jesse Whittock was the first to announce that Netflix was picking up the series back in late September, noting that only select regions of Netflix would be carrying the show. According to the outlet, the deal “covers the U.S., Latin America, numerous territories in EMEA such as Spain and the Nordics, and across Asia, including India, South East Asia, Japan, and Korea.” In all other territories, like the UK, Canada, and Australia, the series is exclusive to Paramount+, at least for now.
