New Call of Duty: Black Ops rereleases announced

17 June 20263 Mins Read

Two classic Call of Duty games are getting a rerelease this summer. Treyarch announced Wednesday that Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 are being ported to unspecified PlayStation platforms in July. Developer Iron Galaxy, which has a rich history of game ports and support work, is handling development of the rereleases.

Treyarch confirmed that the PlayStation versions of Black Ops and Black Ops 2 will include each game’s campaign, multiplayer, and Zombies modes.

The announcement confirms a leak from May, when new ratings for Black Ops and Black Ops 2 were spotted on Korea’s Game Rating and Administration Committee. Those ratings didn’t specify platforms, but longstanding rumors about new versions of the first two Black Ops games indicated that they’d be coming to multiple platforms, including Nintendo Switch 2. Thus far, however, only new PlayStation versions are confirmed.

Polygon has reached out to representatives for Call of Duty for more details on the rereleases. It’s unclear whether the PlayStation ports will include any new features or crossplay with existing platforms.

Call of Duty: Black Ops was originally released in 2010 for PlayStation 3, Wii, Windows PC, and Xbox 360. Black Ops 2 arrived two years later on PS3, Wii U, Windows PC, and Xbox 360. Both games are available on PC via Steam, and the Xbox 360 versions are playable via backward compatibility on Xbox One and Xbox Series X.

Activision has revisited a beloved Call of Duty entry once before, with 2016’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered, a high-gloss update to 2007’s Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. The most recent entry in the Black Ops sub-franchise is 2025’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. Although the game remained a bestseller for Activision and Treyarch, its tepid reception forced the developers to rethink their approach to releasing future Call of Duty sequels.

Activision recently announced a new Call of Duty game: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will be released on Oct. 23. Modern Warfare 4 is set in a “rapidly escalating global conflict centered on the Korean Peninsula,” according to developer Infinity Ward. This year’s Call of Duty will be released on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X. Modern Warfare 4 will be the first COD on a Nintendo platform since 2013’s Call of Duty: Ghosts for Wii U.

Please just put the entire Call of Duty series on Game Pass
