Netflix is bringing more Formula 1 coverage in 2026. In addition to Drive to Survive returning for its second season this February, and the 2021 biographical film Schumacher, the streamer has just announced a new feature-length documentary, Schumacher ‘94, focusing on the most pivotal year in the racing legend’s career.
The announcement came out of Berlin today during Netflix’s What Next? 2026 showcase, where the streamer unveiled its upcoming slate of German-produced content and international non-fiction features for 2026, and it’s fair to say its slate is pretty packed.
As mentioned, this marks the second major documentary Netflix has produced on the F1 superstar. In 2021, it released the documentary simply titled Schumacher, which provided us with a broad overview of Michael Schumacher’s life. Hanns-Bruno Kammertöns, Vanessa Nöcker, and Michael Wech were behind that title, and it left Netflix for a period before eventually returning.
Here is everything we know so far about Schumacher ‘94.
What is Schumacher ‘94 about?
Unlike the 2021 documentary, this new project promises a granular, in-depth look at the year that changed everything: 1994. It focuses on that particular Formula 1 season, known for extreme highs and devastating lows.
According to the official synopsis provided by Netflix at the Berlin event, the film tracks the 25-year-old Michael Schumacher as he wins the first Grand Prix of the season in Brazil while racing for the Benetton-Ford team. This victory sets the stage for what would become an unprecedented career, sparking the global phenomenon known as “Schumi Mania.”
However, the documentary will not shy away from the season’s darkness. 1994 was one of the most dramatic years in the sport’s history, marked tragically by the lethal accident of Ayrton Senna at Imola, as well as rampant accusations of manipulation, technical cheating, and unfair driving maneuvers that plagued the grid.
Similar to previous projects endorsed by the family, Schumacher ‘94 will feature intimate contributions from those closest to the driver. Corinna Schumacher, Michael’s wife and longtime emotional anchor, is confirmed to feature in the documentary. The film aims to contrast the public perception of Schumacher as an “uncompromising fighter” on the tarmac with his private persona as a sensitive and empathic man.
Per the announcement, Corinna will offer insights into the “beginnings of an extraordinary love story—one that is still going strong today,” suggesting the film will balance the technical and sporting drama of ’94 with a strong emotional throughline.
Who’s behind Schumacher ’94? When will it release on Netflix?
The documentary is helmed by director Christin Freitag, with Nicolai Mehring serving as director of photography. The creative team also includes editor Bobby Good and set designer Benjamin Scholl, who are tasked with piecing together the archival footage and interviews to recreate the atmosphere of the mid-90s.
On the business side, the film is produced by LEONINE Documentaries. The project is executive produced by Jochen Köstler, Janek Romero, and Constanze Guttmann, with Andreas Tuerpe serving as line producer and Niko Reich as unit production manager. To ensure the historical accuracy of such a controversial racing season, journalist Hans Mahr has been brought on board as an expert advisor.
No release date yet, but it will drop on Netflix globally in 2026.
