A ‘classic-style Star Fox game’ is rumored to be in the works
Brace for barrel rolls. A new Star Fox game is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 this summer, according to reliable leaker Nate the Hate. The podcaster and prolific rumormonger said Friday that Nintendo is working on a “classic-style Star Fox game,” implying that it will be an on-rails shooter-adventure in the vein of the original Star Fox and Star Fox 64.
The unofficial reveal of a brand-new Star Fox game comes the day after Nintendo and Illumination announced that Star Fox’s Fox McCloud will appear in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, a major cameo for the Super Mario animated sequel. Actor Glen Powell will voice Fox in the movie.
Details on the new Star Fox game for Switch 2 are scant. Citing an unnamed source, Nate the Hate said “the visuals are supposed to be very good, very satisfying” and that the game will feature online multiplayer. He expects an official reveal in April that will be similar to how Nintendo announced Splatoon Raiders — “just a random drop.”
Nate the Hate said that he also expects Splatoon Raiders, Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, Rhythm Heaven Groove, and a Switch Sports game for Switch 2 to arrive this summer.
The most recently released game in the series is Star Fox 2, a title that was originally developed (but never released) for the Super NES. Star Fox 2 was ultimately released as part of the Super NES Classic Edition lineup and later came to Nintendo Switch Online.
Prior to Star Fox 2‘s release, Nintendo released Star Fox Zero and Star Fox Guard, both of which were co-developed with PlatinumGames. Star Fox Zero blended the series’ on-rails shooting with land-based elements, giving players control of a bipedal version of the Arwing and the Landmaster tank. Star Fox Guard is a tower defense game in which players must protect bases owned by Slippy Toad’s uncle Grippy from attackers by monitoring security cameras. The two Wii U games received mixed reviews.
Polygon has reached out to Nintendo for comment on the new Star Fox title and will update when the company responds.
