News (National) Siminovitch Prize Receives Funding Increase – Siminovitch Theatre Foundation, Theater News

21 August 20252 Mins Read

At a critical time for Canada, in the face of remarkable disruption and opportunity, an increased investment is being made in theatre artists who shape the stories of who we are as a country and imagine new futures.

The Siminovitch Prize will increase to $100,000 for the mid-career award (up from $75,000), with each of the three finalists receiving $10,000 (up from $5,000). A total of $170,000 will be awarded, underscoring a commitment to theatre as a vital tool for building empathy, creativity, and human connection, essential to cultural life and our national identity and resilience.

The Siminovitch Prize, which celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2025, is Canada’s most valuable theatre prize. It continues to be funded annually through the generosity of individuals, foundations, and corporate partners who believe in the transformative power of theatre. The Siminovitch Prize is unique in Canada in that it receives no government operating funding and has no endowment, relying solely on the philanthropic support of those who understand the importance of investing in the art form.

The Siminovitch Theatre Foundation is grateful for the support from the National Arts Centre English Theatre, whose generous one-year supplement to the 2025 Siminovitch Prize encourages the creation of Canadian theatre and amplifies the impact of the Prize. Furthermore, the Foundation extends its heartfelt thanks to The William and Nona Heaslip Foundation, whose commitment to the Siminovitch Prize will provide a three-year supplement through to December 2028. Their sustained support reflects a shared vision for the future of Canadian theatre and the vital work of the Siminovitch Prize.

In addition to these extraordinary contributions, Power Corporation of Canada is proud to serve as the presenter of the Siminovitch Prize shortlist. Their three-year commitment has made it possible to double the mid-career shortlist award, ensuring that these exceptional artists continue to thrive and inspire new generations.

A total of $170,000 will be awarded on December 1:

  • The mid-career Siminovitch Prize will increase to $100,000 (up from $75,000).
  • Each of the three finalists will receive $10,000 (up from $5,000).
  • The emerging artist Protégé selected by the Laureate will receive $25,000.
  • Three additional emerging artists selected by the finalists will each receive a $5,000 grant.

The Siminovitch Prize Timeline for 2025:

  • Shortlist Announcement: October 2, 2025
  • Award Ceremony & Winner Announcement: December 1, 2025
