Niagara Falls is fully upgrading this historic attraction and here’s what to expect

This historic Niagara Falls attraction will soon undergo a huge transformation, with a goal to make it into a fully year-round, world-class guest experience.

The upcoming multi-phase redevelopment will see a number of significant improvements to Niagara Parks’ flagship attraction, Journey Behind the Falls.

What upgrades are coming to Journey Behind the Falls?

According to Niagara Parks, these upgrades will come in phases. These updates include restoring a historic tunnel to expand the tunnel network, building a brand-new year‑round viewing platform and replacing the existing Rainbow viewing platform.

And the team isn’t wasting any time – they’re going straight to work with mobilizing crews and setting up a crane just north of Table Rock Centre to facilitate construction within the gorge starting March 23, 2026. The crane will be in place until April 2027.

Phase one will see the redevelopment of what the team calls a “new stabilized, fully accessible tunnel,” which will then lead to a heated and covered viewing platform. It will expand capacity and reduce congestion for all to enjoy year-round.

“Niagara Parks is proud to invest in significant improvements at our flagship attraction, Journey Behind the Falls. This is a bucket-list worthy experience – a must-see attraction that has existed in some form or another for over two centuries,” says Graham Coveney, Niagara Parks Chair.

“These updates will improve and expand the guest experience while protecting its longevity as a top attraction for all guests when visiting Niagara Falls.”

When will the Journey Behind the Falls upgrades be complete?

Phase two will look into the current Rainbow Platform. It will undergo a complete reconstruction to reach modern safety standards. It’s a key viewing area at Journey Behind the Falls, and it’s nearing the end of its life cycle.

“The restored tunnel and new secondary viewing platform from Phase I will allow the attraction to remain open during construction on the Rainbow Platform. Phase II is expected to be completed by May 2028,” shares the Niagara Parks team.

Although it’ll take about two years to see its completion, visitors will still be able to enjoy the Journey Behind the Falls attraction throughout much of its transformation.

If you have yet to cross off the historic attraction from your bucket list, you might want to wait because it sounds like the experience is about to get a whole lot better.
