Entertaining as the season changes calls for more complex, richer wines.Milos Stankovic/iStockPhoto / Getty Images

Not enough is said about the texture of wine. The comforting and sustaining sensation of a well-made pinot noir or the crisp and creamy nature of chardonnay from Chablis is as important to our enjoyment as its taste and smell.

To my mind, texture becomes even more integral to wine appreciation as the days and nights become cooler. The thirst-quenching wines that helped beat the summer’s heat don’t satiate the same way in October. The changing season calls for multidimensional wines with richer, rounder or more-oomph texture that contributes depth, complexity and personality to our glass.

Give thanks with Canadian wine, starting with these eight worthwhile bottlesSubscriber content

The nine wines recommended this week display a range of styles, with varying aromas, flavours and textures to experience and savour. As added bonus for hosts or party-goers, they are prime bottles to bring to the dinner table.

Pascal Bouchard Blancs Cailloux Petit Chablis 2023 (France), $29.95

Rating: 90

The Petit Chablis appellation, which covers portions of the hillsides on both sides of the Serein valley outside of the main Chablis vineyard sites, was responsible for roughly 20 per cent of the 2023 harvest. These white wines are made exclusively from the chardonnay grape, which, in this instance, results in an expressive and intense wine marked by lemon and apple flavours with toast and earthy notes. Made without any oak influence, this displays the chalky character that the region is famous for. It’s a terrific white to enjoy on its own or with a meal.
