No pants, no problem! Toronto’s cheeky Polar Bear Skate returns this month

12 December 20253 Mins Read

If you ever wondered how far Toronto’s winter spirit can go, there’s an answer: right down to your skivvies. Toronto’s The Bentway is bringing back its chilliest winter ritual: the annual Polar Bear Skate.

Bundle up — or rather, don’t! On Dec. 28 at 12 p.m., the Polar Bear Skate calls on brave residents to strip down to their underwear and take a fearless lap around the Bentway’s trail.

It’s the city’s coldest farewell to the year!

What to expect

“All participants must sign a waiver before taking part in the Polar Bear Skate,” shares organizers. “Participants under 18 must be accompanied by a legal guardian. Waivers will be at the yellow check-in tent.”

Registration opens right at 12 p.m. with the skate beginning at 1 p.m. It will last about five to 10 minutes, so be there on time!

Be sure to bring your own skates or rent some! Adult skates cost $12.99, first-come, first-served.

There will also be an all-gender tent along with coat racks and hangers for your clothes.

If the idea of skating in your unmentionables makes you cold just thinking about it, it’s totally okay; you can still attend and show some support for the brave participants.

Organizers are encouraging everyone to come out, mingle, and cheer on the crowd.

But beyond the fun and frozen cheeks, this winter tradition has a whole lot of heart. According to The Bentway, attendees are encouraged to bring donations of new or gently used shoes, which will be collected onsite throughout the event.

All contributions will be distributed by New Circles Community Services to local individuals and families living on a limited income.

It’s a simple and easy way to help neighbours during the holiday season. And no skating is required!

So whether you’re gliding around the trail in your undies or staying warm on the sidelines, the Polar Bear Skate is not one to miss.
