  • A Cold War bunker in Nova Scotia is being transformed into a luxury hotel with fallout shelter capabilities.
  • The facility will include amenities such as a spa, gym, café, and lounge, with plans for future agricultural developments.

A Cold War-era bunker in Colchester County, Nova Scotia, is undergoing renovations to become a dual-purpose luxury hotel and fallout shelter. Originally constructed in 1964 as a government refuge in the event of potential nuclear threats, the Debert Diefenbunker is being converted into a facility offering both hospitality services and emergency accommodations.

The renovation project includes the development of dozens of suites equipped with high-end amenities such as a spa, gym, café, and lounge. Additionally, plans are underway to construct a tunnel to a nearby former NATO building for food production purposes. The facility will also serve as a boutique hotel when not in use as a shelter, with the potential to employ 35 to 40 staff members.

Eleven units have already been sold, with full payments received, although pricing details have not been disclosed. The renovation is expected to be completed by early 2027. The Municipality of Colchester is involved in ongoing discussions regarding plans for the property, which is adjacent to the municipally owned Debert Airport.
