Obsession’s box-office bonanza can’t even be slowed down by Steven Spielberg

Although Disclosure Day had a great opening weekend, Obsession’s box office success continues to impress

Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure Day did better than expected at the domestic box office this weekend, but even its solid performance wasn’t enough to slow Obsession down.

Deadline reports that Disclosure Day will make $44 million domestically in its opening weekend at the box office. Although that’s a lower opening than movies like The Devil Wears Prada 2 or Michael, it performed better than box office analysts expected. Disclosure Day’s opening weekend is the fifth-best among Steven Spielberg’s wider filmography and the best for a new IP from Amblin Entertainment. Worldwide, the movie is expected to gross $92.9 million by the time the weekend is over.

Although Disclosure Day put up a respectable opening weekend performance, Obsession is the truly astonishing movie this weekend. It’s expected to gross $19 million over this three-day weekend, which is only a 25% drop from last week. That’s an impressive holdover for a horror flick that was made for just $1 million dollars and has seemingly just grown in popularity since it hit theaters in May.

The fact that it’s outgrossing the likes of Backrooms and The Mandalorian and Grogu in its fifth week is truly astounding. If you’re curious about how this weekend’s domestic box office is shaking out, Deadline shared its top 10 ranking on Sunday morning:

  1. Disclosure Day: $44 million
  2. Obsession: $19 million
  3. Scary Movie: $14.5 million
  4. Backrooms: $11.26 million
  5. Masters of the Universe: $8.66 million
  6. The Mandalorian and Grogu: $4.7 million
  7. Michael: $4.1 million
  8. BTS World Tour “Airbag”: $3.8 million
  9. The Furious: $2.75 million
  10. Stop! That! Train!: $2 million

Ultimately, it’s not too surprising that Disclosure Day and Obsession are doing so well at the box office because both are amazing films. In Polygon’s review of Disclosure Day, Brian VanHooker wrote that it “not only hooked me with its thriller aspect, but it made me feel a bit more sentimental as well, like the Spielberg movies I watched when I was a kid.”

Polygon had similar praise for Obsession, with Jesse Hassenger calling it an “assured and freaky debut feature from writer-director Curry Barke.” Expect both Disclosure Day and Obsession to remain in theaters for some time.
