Baiul delivered a stunning free skate that combined athleticism and artistry, proving she was one of the most exciting young skaters in the world.
But the gold medal wasn’t immediately hers.
After her performance, the judges were divided, and the final result came down to extremely narrow margins. Baiul ultimately received the marks she needed to move ahead of Kerrigan and win the gold medal. Kerrigan took silver, while Chen Lu of China won bronze.
The judging result created more controversy, with many believing it was Kerrigan who delivered the better performance.
