One of the largest islands in the Great Lakes is the area’s’ local gem’

7 July 20252 Mins Read

Located at the east end of Lake Ontario, 15 minutes west of Kingston, you’ll find Amherst Island. This island calls itself “the gem of Lake Ontario,” and we can see why. From sandy beaches to bike trails, here’s everything to check out while visiting.

First and foremost, you’ll need to get yourself to Amherst Island and to do so, you’ll have to catch a ferry.

The Amherst Island Ferry Service runs between the Millhaven Ferry Dock (mainland side) and the Stella Ferry Dock (island side) on a daily, year-round basis.

The ferry leaves Stella on the hour every hour from 6 a.m. until 1 a.m., leaving Millhaven on the half-hour from 6:30 a.m. until the last boat at 1:30 a.m.

Pedestrian passengers can take the ferry for free, while a car, truck (under one ton), van, farm tractor or small school bus will cost $10.

Want to relax by the beach? One of the island’s beaches, Back Beach, is the perfect spot.

According to Amherst Island, “Back Beach is a secluded, quiet spot that is perfect for those who want to escape the crowds. This stunning beach offers unobstructed views of Lake Ontario, also an ideal spot for swimming, kayaking, and paddle boarding.”

Rentals for kayaks, paddleboards canoes are available along the beach.

There’s plenty of park space, which comes as no surprise, as the island is one of the biggest in the Great Lakes.

Centennial Park is in the heart of the island with “plenty of green space, as well as a playground, picnic tables and benches.”

While on Amherst Island, make sure to stop at The Back Kitchen, known for its classic yet delicious bites such as fish and chips, burgers, pulled pork sandwiches and poutine.

Start planning your visit, Ontario.
