Ontario ice skating trails that shine bright when the sun goes down

Picture this: you’re about to embark on a peaceful, nighttime ice skating experience, and the only thing that illuminates your path is the moonlight – and a few tiki torches. If that sounds like a magical way to spend your winter, there are a handful of Ontario skating trails that welcome guests to enjoy an evening under the stars.

Many of these trails are often lit up by hundreds of tiki torches, offering a more intimate skating adventure.

Here are a few you need to check out:

Check out Arrowhead Provincial Park’s skating trail on Fire & Ice nights. The path is illuminated with hundreds of tiki torches. According to the park, the availability of skating is weather-dependent, but it usually opens in January.

Where: 451 Arrowhead Park Rd., Huntsville, Ont.

Lace up your skates and hit the 1.5km natural ice surface magical winter experience. But you need to stop by in the evening and skate at night. The trail is lit by dozens of torches to guide you on your way.

It’s important to note that its exclusive use is for Fern Resort guests only. It usually opens in January.

Where: 4432 Fern Resort Rd. – Ramara, Ont.

A string of lights and lamp posts make the LV Four Season Trail shine bright during night skates! It’s a popular event throughout the winter season, bringing in over 1,000 skaters per evening.

The trail typically opens in January and closes in March. Time to plan your trip!

Where: 2 Henan Rd. – Pembroke, Ont.

This park has a little secret – its skating trail. The 400 metre skating trail winds around forested terrain, and every evening the park turns on the trail lights for skating under the stars until 10 p.m.

It’s truly magical!

Where: 1593 Bruce Rd. 33, RR#1 – Port Elgin, Ont.

The ice trail opens annually on Dec. 27 and welcomes all for a day of some fun in the snow. And on Saturday nights, the trail is lit with 400 torches for “Light the Night” night skating. How cool is that?! Add in hot mulled wine, and it’s a night to remember.

Night skating is scheduled from 6 to 9 p.m. every Saturday.

Where: Muskoka Lakes Farm & Winery – 1074 Cranberry Rd., Bala

Though it’s not lit up by torches, the Barbara Ann Scott Ice Trail in Toronto’s College Park is illuminated with bright city lights for the perfect night skate.

It’s now open for some holiday skating.

Where: 420 Yonge St.

Enjoy it out there, Ontario!
