Ontario is home to a legendary swamp with a lookout and floating boardwalks

10 October 20252 Mins Read

If you love a great lake experience, make your way to Schmidt Lake this fall. It’s part of the Greenock Swamp Wetland Complex that covers over 20,000 acres of land in southern Bruce County. This area is home to a legendary swamp, and you can get the best views of the surrounding area just off a boardwalk.

About a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Toronto is where you’ll find this thrilling outdoor experience. The Greenock Swamp Wetland Complex offers a lovely escape to the outdoors through its eight trails.

What to expect

Some of these trails also feature boardwalks that allow you to see the swamp in all its glory. “This swamp is well known for its size and history. It is one of the most diverse natural areas in Grey and Bruce Counties,” shares the Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority.

The group also mentions that you can view 11 species of birds of prey here, with eight of these species residing on the property.

As for Schmidt Lake and its swamp, its ecosystem is known for its ability to “act as a giant sponge, releasing water during periods of drought and absorbing water during heavy rainfall,” according to the Municipality of Brockton.

According to the site, the swamp boasts a diverse and abundant wildlife population. It’s home to several significant species, from “the carnivorous Pitcher and Sundew Plants to bald eagles and everything in between.”

Enjoy the views from the Schmidt Lake Lookout and walk along the floating boardwalks.

It’s a natural wonderland. See you there?
