Peru’s Tourism Sector Projected to Reach Record $23 Billion Contribution to GDP in 2025

The WTTC, in collaboration with Oxford Economics, forecasts that by the end of 2025, the tourism sector in Peru will contribute over $23 billion to the national economy, representing a 6.9% increase from the previous year. This contribution is expected to account for 7.8% of Peru’s GDP.

The Economic Impact Report (EIR) by the WTTC estimates that the sector will support 1.17 million jobs in Peru by the end of 2025, accounting for 6.6% of the country’s total employment. This represents an 8.4% increase in employment compared to 2019 levels.

Domestic tourism spending in Peru is projected to reach $12 billion by the end of 2025, reflecting a 6.5% year-on-year growth. International tourism is expected to generate over $5 billion, a 9.4% increase from the previous year.

In 2024, the tourism sector contributed $21.6 billion to Peru’s GDP, accounting for 7.5% of the national economy, and supported 1.11 million jobs, equivalent to 6.4% of total employment. International spending reached $4.7 billion, nearly 22% higher than the previous year, while domestic tourism spending was $11.4 billion, marking a year-on-year growth of over 9%.

Leisure travel accounted for more than 86% of total tourism spending in 2024, with business travel comprising 13.8%. The primary source markets were Chile (25%), the United States (18%), and Ecuador (8%).

Looking ahead to 2035, the WTTC projects that Peru’s travel and tourism sector will contribute $34.3 billion to the national economy, representing 8.5% of GDP. Employment in the sector is expected to reach 1.4 million jobs by 2035, with the creation of 278,500 new positions over the next decade.

International visitor spending is anticipated to reach $9.4 billion by 2035, while domestic spending is projected to exceed $16 billion, reinforcing tourism as a significant economic sector in Peru.

Regionally, the travel and tourism sector in Central and South America contributed $358.7 billion to GDP in 2024, accounting for 7.5% of the regional economy. This represents a growth of over 9% from 2019 levels. Employment in the sector reached 17.5 million jobs, or 8% of total regional employment, with a year-on-year increase of 4.4%.

For 2025, the WTTC forecasts that the regional travel and tourism sector will contribute $372 billion to GDP, representing 7.6% of the economy. Employment is expected to rise to 18.2 million jobs, accounting for 8.2% of total regional employment.
