Pokémon Go ‘Kanto Celebration’ event, Timed Research guide

2 September 20253 Mins Read

Pokémon Go is throwing a “Kanto Celebration” event from Sept. 2-7, bringing back the Kanto region Pokémon yet again.

This event has quite a few perks, like tripled Mega Evolution duration, one guaranteed Candy XL for evolving Pokémon, doubled XP from PokéStops, and special photobombs from the three Kanto starter Pokémon. The Kanto starters will also learn their respective legacy moves (Frenzy Plant for Venusaur, Blast Burn for Charizard, and Hydro Cannon for Blastoise), so make sure to take advantage of this to get some really strong Pokémon, if you don’t already have these moves on your Kanto starters. This event also does get the XP perks from the ongoing “XP Celebration” event as well.

Below, we list all the other perks for the Pokémon Go “Kanto Celebration” event, including the Timed Research, premium Special Research, spawns, and more.

Pokémon Go ‘Kanto Celebration’ event Timed Research and reward

Each day will yield new Timed Research that rewards you with one of the four regional Pokémon from Kanto. Make sure to complete the research if you need these for your Pokédex, as they’ll swap out daily at 10 a.m. in your local time.

‘Kanto Celebration: Near and Farfetch’d’ Timed Research (Sept. 2-3)

  • Catch 50 Pokémon (5,000 XP)
  • Use 10 Razz Berries to help catch Pokémon (25 Venusaur Mega Energy)
  • Use 10 Pinap Berries to help catch Pokémon (25 Charizard Mega Energy)
  • Use 10 Nanab Berries to help catch Pokémon (25 Blastoise Mega Energy)
  • Spin 5 PokéStops or gyms (10 Ultra Balls)

Reward: Farfetch’d encounter, 5,000 Stardust, 5,000 XP

Pokémon Go ‘Kanto Legends’ premium Special Research

For $4.99, you can buy access to this premium research. Unlike some of the previous paid tickets, this is special research, meaning that it’s permanent once you buy it. Is the “Kanto Legends” Special Research worth buying? Maybe, but only if you really want the Dynamax legendary birds (Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres), which are the main rewards here.

‘Kanto Legends’ step 1 of 3

  • Catch 151 Pokémon (2 Silver Pinap Berries)
  • Use 151 berries to help catch Pokémon (2 Golden Razz Berries)
  • Spin 51 PokéStops or gyms (10,000 XP)
  • Collect MP from 15 Power Spots (10,000 Stardust)

Rewards: Dynamax Articuno encounter, 30 Articuno Candy, 3 Articuno Candy XL

‘Kanto Legends’ step 2 of 3

We’re still working out this step, but we’ll update this guide when the information becomes available.

The following Collection Challenge will be live throughout the duration of the event:

‘First Partner’ Collection Challenge

  • Catch a Bulbasaur

  • Catch a Charmander
  • Evolve a Charmander into Charmeleon

Pokémon Go ‘Kanto Celebration’ event Field Research and rewards

Spinning a PokéStop during the event period may yield one of these tasks:

  • Catch 5 Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle (Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle encounter)
  • Catch 8 Pokémon (1,000 Stardust)
  • Evolve a Pokémon (1 Rare Candy)
  • Mega Evolve a Venusaur, Charizard, or Blastoise (10,000 XP)
  • Spin 5 PokéStops or gyms (10 Venusaur, Charizard, or Blastoise Mega Energy)

Pokémon Go ‘Kanto Celebration’ event boosted spawns

For whatever reason, Niantic only listed these Pokémon, alongside the phase “and more!” in their usual event blog:

Players have also reported the following spawns, in addition to what Niantic listed above:

  • Bulbasaur
  • Charmander
  • Squirtle
  • Weedle
  • Pidgey
  • Slowpoke
  • Gastly
