The recent U.S. elections have influenced American travelers, with both political and economic factors impacting their travel plans, according to MMGY’s 2024 Portrait of American Travelers surveys.
Even with the election campaign ending, 34% to 36% of travelers report that the election results still influence their travel decisions. These political concerns are more prevalent for international trips than domestic ones, suggesting a cautious approach due to uncertainty about future international relations.
Economic factors are also significantly shaping travel behaviors. Rising cost-of-living concerns and economic conditions have led many Americans to revisit their travel budgets. This has resulted in changes in travel plans, such as fewer trips, shorter stays, choosing more economical destinations, or even postponing major vacations.
Due to the recent election, the survey data indicates a more significant hesitation for international travel than domestic travel. Travelers are wary of potential geopolitical shifts or changes in international relations that might impact their travel plans. As such, overseas travel is now approached with more caution.
In the post-election period, American travelers carefully navigate economic and potential political dynamics. They adjust and balance their love of travel with the new realities, moving forward intentionally with tempered expectations.
