‘Pop The Balloon LIVE’ Canceled at Netflix; Won’t Return for Season 2 But Lives On Elsewhere

Netflix’s experiment with live, appointment-viewing dating shows has hit a major snag. The streaming giant has canceled Pop The Balloon Live. Deadline reports that, alongside a major executive exit, there will not be a second season of the viral hit-turned-live event.

The news comes as part of a broader shakeup within Netflix’s unscripted division, potentially signaling a retreat from a slate of live programming that has failed to capture the massive audiences the streamer had hoped for over the past year. According to Deadline, the series “failed to find much love” among subscribers.

Hosted by Insecure star Yvonne Orji, Pop The Balloon Live premiered in April 2025. The show was based on a viral social media trend where participants would physically pop a balloon to reject a potential suitor. Netflix bet big on the format, making it one of their first entertainment properties to be broadcast live, attempting to create a “watercooler moment” similar to traditional broadcast television. On paper, the concept seemed sound; it mixed an incredibly popular format with a genre of reality programming that typically performs well (see Love is Blind, now in its tenth season).

The decision to adapt the format was somewhat puzzling, given its widespread availability online. The main versions are accessible on YouTube, with Arlette Amuli hosting the US variants and BM Official hosting the UK equivalents. Furthermore, the format is replicated extensively, with the British troupe Sidemen also regularly utilizing it. While the format thrives on platforms like TikTok and Instagram via short clips, the long-form live translation on Netflix evidently did not generate the viewership needed to justify a sophomore season.

The cancellation of Pop The Balloon is part of a larger narrative regarding the struggles of Netflix’s live unscripted department over the past year. While sports and WWE have been the main drivers, and live specials like The Greatest Roast of All Time: Tom Brady found success, their 2025 attempts at weekly live entertainment have mostly fallen flat.

According to the trade report, these disappointments have led to Sahara Bushue’s exit as director of unscripted series at Netflix. Bushue, who joined the company in 2023 and oversaw the slate of live performance series, is leaving the streamer following a string of ratings misses. In addition to Pop The Balloon, Bushue oversaw the recent reboot of Star Search and Building The Band, both of which were virtual no-shows in Netflix’s ratings.

Let’s Dissect Pop The Balloon Live’s Numbers

We didn’t get specific numbers at the time of release, as the show failed to enter the global top 10s. However, data from the Netflix Engagement Reports paints a clear picture, as each episode is listed individually.

While the first episode picked up a modest number of hours watched compared to other titles in the space, viewership fell dramatically in the weeks that followed. Looking at data from the second half of the year, there was clearly no long-term appeal.

Data listed below represents Total Views (H1 + H2) for 2025:

  • Ep 1: Get It Poppin’ – 3,500,000 Views
  • Ep 2: Pop It Like It’s Hot – 1,300,000 Views (-63% drop)
  • Ep 3: Pop Lock and Drop It – 1,100,000 Views
  • Ep 4: No Pops Left To Give – 900,000 Views
  • Ep 5: Big Pop Energy – 800,000 Views
  • Ep 6: In Our Pop Era – 800,000 Views
  • Ep 7: I’m Unpoppable – 700,000 Views
  • Ep 8: Pop Off – 700,000 Views

As mentioned, the show’s format lives on across YouTube and other social media, where new episodes drop on an incredibly frequent basis, with episodes picking up hundreds of thousands to millions of views.
