Fall may mean cooler temperatures and changing leaves, but it also brings plenty of unpredictable weather. Hurricanes and tropical storms can continue through November, bringing heavy rain, high winds, flooding, and power outages. The best time to think about storm preparation is before the forecast gives you a reason to, stashing a supply pack somewhere easy to reach so you won’t have to make a last-minute trip to the store or dig through cabinets.

Ahead of storm season, Amazon is knocking 31% off the Ready America 72-Hour Emergency Kit, bringing the usual $36 price down to $25. It’s an inexpensive way to make sure you’re not caught completely off guard when severe weather strikes.

Ready America 72-Hour Emergency Kit, $25 (was $36) at Amazon

At the center of the 72-hour emergency kit are some of the most basic necessities: food and water. It includes a 2,400-calorie emergency ration food bar, along with six sealed 4.25-ounce water pouches, each with a five-year shelf life. The kit also includes several pieces of gear designed to provide basic protection when conditions outside aren’t ideal. An emergency blanket and poncho can help provide coverage from cold, wind, and rain, while a pair of nitrile gloves can protect your hands when you’re dealing with debris.

For minor injuries, there’s an 18-piece first aid kit with essential supplies for basic care. The included safety whistle adds another layer of preparedness, giving you a simple way to signal for help or communicate if visibility is limited. There’s also an emergency lightstick that provides up to 12 hours of light, which can be especially useful during a blackout or other low-light situation.

All of those supplies come packed inside a lightweight, bright-red backpack, making the kit easy to spot and grab quickly. The backpack keeps everything together so you shouldn’t have to gather individual supplies when time matters, and its compact design makes it suitable for keeping at home, in a car, or at the office.
