Reba McEntire Shares 'Full-Circle' Moment 33 Years Ago That Led to One of Her Biggest Hits

30 September 20253 Mins Read

Reba McEntire is reflecting on a huge time in her career — that’s come back around thanks to TikTok.

In a recently-posted video, the iconic country singer shared a clip of her singing “The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia” alongside fellow singer, actress, and talk show host Vicki Lawrence.

Vicki Lawrence first recorded “The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia” in 1972, and it was a #1 hit! We recorded the song nearly 20 years later and I had the pleasure of singing it with Vicki on her talk show in 1992. Talk about full circle! ❤️

“Vicki Lawrence first recorded ‘The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia’ in 1972, and it was a #1 hit!” McEntire wrote. “We recorded the song nearly 20 years later and I had the pleasure of singing it with Vicki on her talk show in 1992. Talk about full circle!”

And while fans enjoyed seeing the throwback clip, most social media users were surprised to see the fact that Lawrence, the star of the ’80s sitcom Mama’s House, originally recorded the song.

“Vicki Lawrence as in Mama’s House!?” one commenter asked. “I had no clue she was a singer or songwriter! Too cool.”

“I never knew that Vicki recorded any songs! Always a good one!,” another said.

“I never knew Vicki could sing so good,” said a third.

Lawrence’s talk show Vicki! aired from 1992-1994.

“I was so excited about this episode of Vicki I ran home from school to watch and tape it on vcr without commercials of corse [sic],” another commenter remembered.

“The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia” Has Made a Comeback

Over 50 years after its release the “The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia,” has made its way to social media thanks to country singer Briley King recently covering the song on TikTok, according to Country Living Magazine.

King also recently sang the cover at the Grand Ole Opry, along with her husband, Marcus King.

The 1970’s version of the song was recorded by Lawrence’s husband Bobby Russell, and went to the actress after Cher turned it down, the magazine reported. McEntire then recorded a new version of the song in 1991 which earned her an Academy of Country Music nomination for video of the year. She also performed the song at the 1992 American Music Awards.
