As America anticipates a historic surge in travel, a recent report by the U.S. Commission on Seamless and Secure Travel underscores the pressing need for reforms in the country’s air travel system. The call for change comes in anticipation of several major global events, including the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the 2025 Ryder Cup, and America’s 250th anniversary.
The report warns that without immediate action, the current air travel system, which is not equipped to handle such a monumental influx of travelers, will strain under the pressure. The Commission recommends significant improvements to air travel, aiming to enhance airport security and speed.
The travel industry has released a roadmap that proposes measures to position America as a global travel leader and prevent massive entry delays, overwhelmed TSA checkpoints, and frustrated travelers. The proposed reforms include modernizing air traffic control technology and finding solutions to air traffic controller shortages. The report calls for immediate leadership from the White House and action from Congress.
Following the Commission’s report, the U.S. Travel Association is urging Congress and the Trump Administration to take four key steps. Firstly, the Trump Administration should establish a task force to ensure sustained leadership and focus across the federal government to capitalize on global events over the next four years.
Secondly, the report suggests delivering on President Trump’s promise to process visas efficiently and securely for the 2026 World Cup, including full-strength consular staffing for visa processing, extending B-1/B-2 visa validity for vetted visitors, and creating a “Secure Travel Partnership” program.
Thirdly, the U.S. should aim to create the world’s most advanced and secure airport screening process by investing heavily in security technology. Finally, the report calls for strong, modern, and efficient airport borders to keep America safe and global travel moving.
The Commission, composed of former government officials and private sector experts, believes that with bipartisan support and a new administration, America has a once-in-a-generation opportunity to transform its travel infrastructure. This transformation will deliver a world-class travel system and unlock a $100 billion economic opportunity.
The U.S. Travel Association, a non-profit organization representing the $1.3 trillion travel industry, champions policies to increase travel to and within the United States. With this report, the Association underscores the importance of immediate action and comprehensive reforms in the face of historic travel demand.
