RIU Hotels & Resorts has opened its first hotel in Canada, the Riu Plaza Toronto, located in the city’s Entertainment District.
RIU Hotels & Resorts has launched its first Canadian property with the opening of the Riu Plaza Toronto. This new hotel, featuring 352 rooms, is situated in Toronto’s Entertainment District, a central area known for its cultural and economic significance.
The Riu Plaza Toronto is part of a larger development comprising two skyscrapers, each with 49 floors. The hotel occupies 23 floors of one of these buildings, with the remaining floors designated for residential use. The building’s exterior features a brick base that complements the historic 18th-century architecture of the area, paired with a modern glass structure above.
The hotel features a main lobby with a lobby bar located on the ground floor, serving snacks and beverages throughout the day. Additionally, a restaurant located on the second floor offers a full buffet breakfast, which is included in the room rate. The hotel’s design features contemporary elements consistent with RIU’s urban hotel line, utilizing a mix of light and dark tones with chrome and beige accents.
Amenities at the Riu Plaza Toronto include a 24-hour gym and a conference room with a capacity for 40 people, catering to both leisure and business travelers. The hotel’s location at 30 Widmer Street places it near several key attractions, such as the Princess of Wales Theatre, David Pecaut Square, Rogers Centre Stadium, and the CN Tower. The area also offers convenient transport connections.
In line with its sustainability efforts, the hotel employs energy efficiency measures, including cogeneration plants for electricity and thermal energy, as well as initiatives for water conservation and waste reduction.
The opening of the Riu Plaza Toronto is a strategic move for RIU Hotels & Resorts, as Canada represents a significant market for the company, particularly in Caribbean, Mexican, and Central American destinations. This new hotel is the twelfth in RIU’s urban line, joining locations in cities such as Panama, Guadalajara, Madrid, Miami, Chicago, San Francisco, New York, Berlin, London, and Dublin. The company is also expanding its presence in New York with a third hotel currently under construction.
