Tom Morello is honoring his former Audioslave bandmate Chris Cornell on the anniversary of his death.
Morello, 60, who rose to rock stardom as the guitarist for Rage Against the Machine, took to Instagram to honor Cornell, with whom he last performed in January 2017. Cornell died by suicide in May 2017.

“Eight years ago today we lost @chriscornellofficial,” Morello wrote on Instagram, alongside a photo of the duo smiling and performing together in 2014 at a benefit concert for 15 Now, a grassroots organization that fought for a $15 minimum wage in Seattle. “While he was a bandmate and a friend I never stopped being a huge FAN of his incredible talent and voice. So glad he and Soundgarden are being inducted into the @rockhall where they belong. You will never be outshined, my friend.”

Morello has previously opened up about the relationship he shared with Cornell, who rose to fame with the band Soundgarden. According to Guitar.com, Morello told Metal Hammer last year that he believes forming Audioslave and having that constructive outlet was the thing that kept Cornell healthy for many years.

“I believe that the good fortune of all us having met bought him 16 more years. That band was so liberating,” Morello shared. “It really felt like the horizon was completely open. And you know what? Standing onstage with Chris Cornell beside you is pretty great.”
