“He started calling me on a regular basis from the tablet phone thing they have [in prison],” O’Donnell, 63, revealed in the new interview published Saturday, April 12.
The TV personality went on to say that Lyle even made her feel “safe enough” to “love a straight man” for the first time in her life.
“He would tell me about his life, what he’s been doing in prison, and, for the first time in my life, I felt safe enough to trust and be vulnerable and love a straight man,” O’Donnell revealed.
Lyle, along with his brother Erik Menendez, was convicted of first degree murder following the deaths of their parents Joe and Kitty Menendez in 1989.
During their trial—and as highlighted in the 2024 Netflix seriesThe Menendez Brothers—Lyle and Erik’s defense argued that the killings were an act of self-defense, and that they had been abused and molested by their parents.
They were both sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole though they are currently seeking a resentencing.
O’Donnell admitted to the Times that some of her friends first “expressed concern” over her unlikely relationship with Lyle but that she just “shrugged” at the fact that Lyle is a convicted murderer.
