Rumors Swirl of Phantom of the Opera Closing on Broadway — OnStage Blog, Theater News

22 May 20252 Mins Read

The New York Post is reporting from their sources that “The Phantom of the Opera” the long-running beloved musical, will be closing by the end of the year, with the last show possibly occuring on December 31st to align with its popular number “Masquerade” being set around New Year’s eve.

If true, this would represent an end of an era, with Phantom of the Opera being a Broadway staple for new and old tourists alike for 34 years.

Sources tell The Post that the show has not recovered from the pandemic, and is losing more than a million dollars a month.

While folks from the show are denying this, The Post usually has well placed sources that are rarely wrong, so I suspect there’s truth to it closing down, though it may not be until 2023, especially if there’s a surge in ticket demand with this news.

We have to mention, we posted an April Fool’s joke this year claiming to report that Phantom of the Opera was closing, however, there’s no joking with the news this time around (although it hasn’t been confirmed yet).

We’ll be following this story closely and providing updates as we get them.

UPDATE: It has been made official, ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ will close. After the show commemorates its 35th anniversary in January, it will play its final show on February 18, the New York Times reported.
