After a year and a half, School Spirits is departing Netflix in the United States. A new notice has started appearing on the page for the show, confirming that all eight episodes of the first season will leave the streamer on May 30th, with your last day to watch being May 29th. The news comes after the series was just recently renewed for a third season at Paramount+.
In case you missed it, Netflix acquired the US rights to School Spirits in late 2023. The news came as a shock, given that it was the first time a major Paramount+ Original series had been licensed to the streamer while still ongoing. Headlined by Cobra Kai star Peyton List and created by Megan Trinrud and Nate Trinrud, the series is about a girl stuck in the afterlife who investigates her own disappearance, going on a crime-solving mission as she adjusts to high school purgatory.
When we previously covered whether season 2 of School Spirits would come to Netflix, we were extremely cautious. Although we had reported that the show had been licensed for longer than the initial one-year period it was first picked up for, we noted that Paramount+ could be renewing to keep interest in the title flowing, encouraging people to sign up for Paramount+ to watch season 2, which ran from January to March 2025.
As we wrote back then, we referred back to when Paramount licensed several shows back in late 2020 to drum up interest in its two series, Evil and The Unicorn. A year later, they had both departed Netflix, having seen notable bumps in viewership on CBS. The same tactic was employed here, with Paramount hoping that those who binged through season 1 on Netflix would jump over to Paramount+. That seems to have done the job, as Deadline stated in their Season 3 renewal article, “Season 2 premiered to an average audience of 3.9M in its first 28 days, up 94% from the Season 1 premiere.”
Although fans had hoped Netflix would pick up season 2 following its Paramount+ release, that, we know, won’t be the case.
