Scott Adams, Iconic 'Dilbert' Creator, Dead at 68

13 January 20262 Mins Read

Scott Adams, the beloved creator of the comic strip Dilbert, has died after an intense battle with metastatic prostate cancer. According to Variety, the comic creator was 68 at the time of his death

Adams’ death comes less than a year after the cartoonist announced his cancer diagnosis in May 2025, the same former President Joe Biden revealed he also had been diagnosed with cancer.

“I have the same cancer that Joe Biden has,” Adams said at the time. “I also have prostate cancer that has also spread to my bones, but I’ve had it longer than he’s had it — well, longer than he’s admitted having it.”

“I expect to be checking out from this domain sometime this summer,” the cartoonist continued.

Born in Windham, New York on June 8, 1957, Adams was best known for his work on the groundbreaking comic strip, Dilbert, beginning in 1989.

Tapping into his extensive background in professional office settings, Dilbert followed a long-suffering corporate employee navigating the easily relatable issues of an ordinary workplace environment.

With its first comic strip released on April 16, 1989, Dilbert ran for an impressive 34 years of continuous publication. On March 26, 2023, the strip was abruptly dropped by several prominent publishers after Adams’ controversial statements on Black Americans.

The strip was later relaunched by Adams as a webcomic under the title Daily Dilbert Reborn.

At the height of his career, Adams garnered numerous awards and other prestigious accolades for his work in the comics field, including the National Cartoonists Society’s Reuben Award for Outstanding Cartoonist and Best Newspaper Comic Strip in 1997.

In 1999, Dilbert was adapted into an adult animated TV series for UPN in 1999, earning a Primetime Emmy nomination upon its initial season. In addition to his comic strip work, Adams also published several books on everything from religion to politics to self-help, including 2019’s Reframe Your Brain: The User Interface for Happiness and Success.
