SEO, AEO, GEO, AISO…What’s the Difference?

31 July 20264 Mins Read

In Brief: The article clarifies distinctions among SEO (Search Engine Optimization), AEO (Answer Engine Optimization), GEO (Geographical Optimization), and AISO (Artificial Intelligence Search Optimization), highlighting how each approach affects hotel online presence and digital marketing effectiveness.

Here’s what each acronym actually does for your hotel

If you’ve spent any time reading about search marketing lately, you’ve probably noticed a growing list of acronyms. SEO, AEO, GEO, AISO, LLMO—the industry seems to invent a new one every few months.

The truth is that while each term emphasizes a slightly different aspect of search, they’re all working toward the same goal: helping people discover trustworthy information when they need it.

Here’s a simple breakdown:

SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

Focus: Traditional search engines like Google and Bing.

SEO is the practice of improving a website so it appears prominently in search engine results. It includes technical optimization, quality content, structured data, authority building, and user experience.

Goal: Earn visibility in traditional search results

AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)

Focus: Direct answers.

AEO emphasizes creating content that can be used to answer specific questions, whether through featured snippets, voice assistants, or AI-generated responses.

It prioritizes clear, concise, well-structured information that answers user intent immediately.

Goal: Become the source behind direct answers.

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)

Focus: AI-generated search experiences.

GEO is centered on helping AI systems such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, and Claude understand and reference your content when generating recommendations and summaries.

Rather than simply ranking pages, GEO focuses on making information understandable and trustworthy for generative AI.

Goal: Increase visibility within AI-generated responses.

AISO (AI Search Optimization)

Focus: Comprehensive AI discoverability.

AISO expands beyond optimizing for a single AI platform. It combines traditional SEO with structured content, entity optimization, technical signals, authority, and evidence that helps AI systems confidently recommend a business.

At Vizergy, we view AISO as preparing a brand to succeed across today’s evolving AI search ecosystem rather than chasing any single algorithm.

Goal: Improve recommendation readiness across AI-powered search experiences.

LLMO (Large Language Model Optimization)

Focus: Large language models.

LLMO specifically refers to optimizing information so large language models can accurately understand, retrieve, and reference it.

Many professionals use LLMO interchangeably with GEO, although LLMO focuses more on how AI models process information than where that information appears.

Goal: Make content easier for language models to interpret accurately.

What do they have in common?

All of these approaches prioritize many of the same best practices:

  • Helpful, high-quality content
  • Clear information architecture
  • Strong technical SEO
  • Structured data
  • Trustworthy sources
  • Accurate business information
  • Demonstrated expertise
  • Excellent user experience

In other words, none of these replace SEO—they build upon it.

So which one matters most?

The answer is less about choosing an acronym and more about building a strong digital foundation.

Search is evolving from ranking pages to recommending trusted sources. Whether someone calls it SEO, AEO, GEO, AISO, or LLMO, the organizations that will succeed are those that consistently publish authoritative content, maintain strong technical foundations, and clearly communicate who they are and why they’re trustworthy.

The terminology may continue to evolve, but the underlying objective remains the same: help both people and AI confidently understand, trust, and recommend your brand.
