Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is in the middle of one of basketball’s historic runs. Currently in the league finals and this year’s NBA scoring champion, the Toronto-born, Hamilton-raised Gilgeous-Alexander has a laundry list of accomplishments. A multi-time NBA all-star. A bronze medallist at the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup. He was also the NBA’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) for the 2024-25 season.
In addition to his accolades on the court, the athlete has also been making moves outside of basketball. With a keen eye for detail and a love of clothes, Gilgeous-Alexander has established himself as a top name in men’s fashion.
Boasting brand deals at Levis and Canada Goose, and championed by media outlets such as Vogue, Gilgeous-Alexander is constantly looked to as a style trendsetter. The athlete has been spotted at Paris Fashion Week as well as the Met Gala, and has walked the runway for legacy brands such as Thom Browne. It’s an impressive resume for anyone in menswear, compounded by the fact that for Gilgeous-Alexander, fashion is at best a side project. A passionate hobby while he’s actively establishing himself as one of the world’s best basketball players.
How Canadian NBA star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander began charting his path to MVP when he was a teen
“SGA is arguably both the best and most stylish player in the NBA,” said Yang-Yi Goh, a senior style editor with GQ Magazine. The readers of GQ voted Gilgeous-Alexander the most stylish man of 2022. There are multiple articles devoted to everything from his love of vests to his recent shoe collaboration with Converse. “He has a very locked-in sense of style where he just understands what looks good on his body. And unlike a lot of players around the league, he doesn’t appear to have a stylist. I think a lot of this is coming from his own tastes and his own vision.”
Goh credits Gilgeous-Alexander’s rise in part to people looking for style inspiration from NBA game-day tunnels: players showing off their fashion choices on the walkway between arena entrances and the locker room. With 82 games in a regular season, every appearance is a chance for a new fit. By using the games to highlight his personal style, Goh believes SGA mirrors the way many younger fans highlight their fashion on social media reels.
“It’s definitely emblematic of the way Gen Z and Gen Alpha are dressing right now. He likes a lot of boxier, cropped tops. He likes to wear loose, baggy denim. He has a really great sense of silhouettes and likes to mix things up and play around. It coalesces into one of the most interesting and individual dressers in the whole league.”

While Gilgeous-Alexander may be known for his bold looks, he doesn’t shy away from a good trend. This workwear look may be minimalist, but the silhouette fits perfectly.
The NBA star’s love for vintage clothing and rare pieces is well documented. This vintage John Lennon shirt is a great example of how mixing eras can lead to great results in fashion.
An elevated take on the double-denim Canadian tuxedo, camo gloves, and a pair of his signature Shai 001 Converse sneakers show why Gilgeous-Alexander is one of the most interesting style icons in the league.
