Loose, wide-leg pants – particularly in blue denim – were plentiful on the spring/summer 2025 runways at Acne Studios, Bottega Veneta, Sacai and more. And unlike many runway trends, this one can be found at a range of price points and would be a breeze to incorporate into both your on-duty and off-duty wardrobes.
Whether you opt for a more understated relaxed fit or go for a style that’s extra wide, finding a pair that fits well is key. Low-rise to mid-rise jeans are more in fashion, and women will want to ensure a good fit at both the waist and hip, whereas for men it’s simply about finding a pair in the right waist size, says Brandon Svarc, founder of Montreal-based Naked & Famous Denim.
Then, also consider the length of the jeans – longer, floor-grazing fits are in fashion, but so are cuffed, slightly cropped silhouettes. “Wearing it short, I think it looks cooler that way, but you also get to be physically cooler because you get a little breeze on the ankles,” says Svarc.
Beyond the fit and style, the type of denim used will also make a big difference. A heavier-weight, more rigid denim may not work for very hot days, but for spring weather and air-conditioned offices they will offer “a little bit more structure” and form, making your jeans look more polished, says Svarc. “Sometimes when you go for a lighter-weight denim, especially in brands that do a wash, then it just falls too much and you get this too wishy-washy, almost pajama-like look.”
Some jeans are tagged with their weight in ounces per square yard; the definitions can vary from brand to brand but at Naked & Famous Denim, 10 to 13 ounces is standard weight while 14 to 16 oz is mid-weight, more rigid and will take time to break in.
Finally, you’ll want to look at the fibre content. Jeans made with a small percentage of elastane or spandex can be more comfortable to wear, but they may not last as long as 100-per-cent cotton styles and can also stretch out over time, says Svarc.
