Frontmezzjunkies reports: Breaking the Binary Theatre Festival kicks off with a star-studded The Drowsy Chaperone

The fourth annual Breaking the Binary Theatre Festival will kick off with a one-night-only concert of the immensely funny and brilliant The Drowsy Chaperone, featuring an all trans and non-binary cast, at the Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage at Carnegie Hall on Monday, October 20.

Led by Tony Award nominee and director L Morgan Lee (Broadway’s A Strange Loop), the cast shines brightly with powerhouse talent, including Emmy Award winner Laverne Cox (“Orange is the New Black“) as the Drowsy Chaperone, Joslyn Defreece as Underling, Tony Award winner Alex Newell (Broadway’s Shucked) as Janet Van De Graaf, Peppermint (RuPaul’s Drag Race) as Mrs. Tottendale, Emmy Award winner Jonathan Van Ness (Queer Eye) as Man in Chair, and pop singer Betty Who (Broadway’s Hadestown) as Robert Martin. Additional cast members will be announced soon.

The Drowsy Chaperone, with music and lyrics by Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison, and a book by Bob Martin and Don McKellar, first hit Broadway in 2006. This concert marks the musical’s first major return to New York since its Broadway debut—a fresh, exciting reimagining that celebrates its timeless charm and unforgettable greatness.

The Breaking the Binary Theatre Festival, dedicated to showcasing work created and developed by transgender, non-binary, and Two-Spirit+ (TNB2S+) artists, runs from October 20 to 26, continuing its mission to elevate diverse voices in the theatre world.

All net proceeds from the concert will benefit Breaking the Binary Theatre, Trans Lifeline, and Black Trans Liberation. Tickets will be on sale this August—stay tuned for more details. Click here for more information.
