Anyone receiving payments through the Quebec Pension Plan (QPP) has a deposit coming their way this month, and depending on your situation, it could be worth well over $2,000.
Retraite Québec issues QPP payments monthly, same as every other month, but the amount varies a lot from person to person based on a few key factors. Here’s what determines your payment and when this month’s deposit lands.
What the QPP actually covers
The Quebec Pension Plan isn’t just a retirement fund. Contributions taken off your paycheque also provide disability protection and financial support for your family in the event of your death.
There’s nothing to sign up for on the contribution side, since deductions start automatically with your very first paycheque. That means years of contributing eventually turn into a payout that can make a real difference in retirement, especially with the cost of living where it is right now.
Why payment amounts vary so much
There’s no single fixed amount that applies to everyone. Your pension is calculated based on three factors: how many years you contributed, your total declared employment income over that time, and, maybe most importantly, the age at which you decide to start collecting.
You can apply as early as age 60, but doing so comes with a permanent reduction to your monthly amount. Wait until 65, and you get the full pension your contributions entitle you to. Hold off until 72, and your monthly payment increases substantially beyond that.
Here are the current maximum monthly amounts, based on the age you start collecting:
- Age 60: up to $964.90 per month (64% of the reference pension)
- Age 65: up to $1,507.65 per month (full pension)
- Age 72: up to $2,394.15 per month (158.8% of the reference pension)
These are ceilings, not typical payments. Most recipients get less than the maximum, since your actual amount is prorated based on what you really contributed over your working life.
Once you turn 65, contributing to the QPP becomes optional if you’re still working, both for you and your employer.

Unlike contributions, which happen automatically, the pension itself is never paid out unless you apply for it. Processing takes roughly 12 weeks once your application is submitted, so it’s worth getting ahead of it if you’re nearing the age you want to start collecting.
You can apply online through Retraite Québec’s My Account portal, by mail, or in person at one of its offices. Once your application goes through, payments are deposited automatically every month after that, typically on the last business day of the month.
What about Old Age Security?
Old Age Security is the federal government’s base pension, paid out monthly to seniors regardless of their work history. That’s different from the QPP, which is tied directly to what you contributed while working. OAS amounts also vary by age and income, and for the current quarter, seniors 75 and up can receive up to $827.17 a month, while those 65 to 74 top out at $751.97.
Combine the two programs at their highest possible rates, meaning QPP collected at age 72 and OAS collected at 75 or older, and a senior could theoretically receive just over $3,200 a month between the two.
Very few people actually hit that ceiling, since it requires maxing out contributions and delaying both pensions as long as possible.

August’s QPP payment is scheduled for Monday, August 31.
