Southern Ontario’s largest bog has a wooden trail to explore

24 July 20253 Mins Read

Calling all nature enthusiasts! Alfred Bog is the largest of its kind in southern Ontario, and it’s home to a plethora of wild animals and plants. There’s even a trail you can take that will lead you on a fun-filled outdoor adventure.

If you’re heading to the Alfred Bog from Toronto, it’ll take you about a five-hour drive east, towards Ottawa. From Canada’s capital city, it’s about an hour’s drive.

The largest high-quality bog in southern Ontario

According to the Nature Conservancy of Canada, bogs take thousands of years to develop. It’s home to several wildlife, including moose, waterfowl, turtles and orchids.

“It is classified by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry as a provincially significant wetland and an Area of Natural and Scientific Interest,” shares the NCC.

To best way to explore the bog safely is through its 273-metre boardwalk without “harming its sensitive ecosystem,” according to the South Nation Conservation.

“The dominant vegetation is peat moss, and this produces a unique community of plants and animals,” the site adds.

Walking the Bog

The Bog Walk, as it is named, is rated as moderate difficulty and is a perfect trail for a nice scenic walk along with your pup.

If you’re in search of more boardwalk adventures, check out Findlay Creek Boardwalk. It is about 30 minutes away from Ottawa, and according to the Great Lakes Guide, the area itself spans 800 acres of rare wetland habitat.

Its point of interest is its viewing platform. Here you’ll get a beautiful view of the wetland and small streams in the area.

There’s so much to do and so little time, for summer that is. Head out and explore our wonderful province and check out this fascinating bog this summer.
