Springs Fire in Moreno Valley explodes to 3,500+ acres, triggers evacuations near Perris

RIVERSIDE COUNTY, Calif. – A massive wind-driven brush fire is tearing through Riverside County, with the Moreno Valley fire—officially known as the Springs Fire—exploding to 3,500 acres and triggering widespread mandatory evacuations. 

Now at 5% containment, the blaze is racing toward Perris and surrounding communities under a high wind warning, forcing thousands of residents to flee as firefighters work to secure the rapidly expanding perimeter.

The Springs Fire is currently estimated at 3,500 acres and is 5% contained, according to Cal Fire. 

The fire broke out just after 11 a.m. in the 15000 block of Gilman Springs Rd. in Moreno Valley.

Crown Fire in Los Angeles County

The Crown Fire is currently estimated at 280 acres and is 5% contained, according to Cal Fire.

The fire was reported a little before 12:30 p.m. near Soledad Canyon and N. Crown Valley roads in Acton.

Firefighters are reporting the fire is advancing at a moderate rate, with the potential to spread to as much as 300 acres.

Big picture view:

The National Weather Service has issued High Wind Warnings and Wind Advisories across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. 

Forecasters expect powerful northeast winds ranging from 25 to 35 mph, with dangerous gusts reaching up to 55 mph in mountain areas and the Highway 14 corridor through 6 p.m. 

These conditions pose a major risk for downed trees and power lines, likely leading to widespread power outages and hazardous travel conditions, particularly for high-profile vehicles. 

Residents are urged to secure loose objects, use extra caution while driving, and remain in lower levels of their homes away from windows to avoid potential falling debris.

What we don’t know:

The exact cause of both fires remains under investigation. 

Officials have not yet confirmed how many structures are in the direct path of either blaze or if any property damage has already occurred.
