Star Wars just introduced your favorite new Glup Shittos in Maul: Shadow Lord

19 March 20263 Mins Read

Sam Witwer returns as ex-Sith Lord Darth Maul in Star Wars: Maul — Shadow Lord on Disney Plus this April 4. The latest trailer shows the ferocious Zabrak staying one step ahead of police detective Captain Brander Lawson and his droid partner Two Boots, and also battling villainous Sith Inquisitors like Marrok and the Eleventh Brother.

However, what caught my attention was the group of rocket-launcher-wielding Zabraks who, in the latest trailer, appear to be taking the fight to the Empire one rocket at a time. While you’d be forgiven for thinking this group of alien rebels — who may or may not be part of the remnants of the Zabrak clans fighting to survive on Dathomir — is just nameless canon fodder, the official Star Wars website has actually given them names: Scorn and Icarus.

Outside of being known as brothers (and Icarus being voiced by legendary voice actor Steve Blum), there’s very little we know about these two. But if there’s one thing that I do know, it’s that their design is cool enough to 1) be used to sell toys and 2) practically destined to become someone’s new favorite Glup Shitto.

For the uninitiated, a Glup Shitto was a joke by Tumblr user gomjabbar in 2020, in which they teased Star Wars fans for getting excited about cameos from minor characters with silly names in a viral post:

“every time a new Star War movie or show is announced all the fans are like “OMG Glup Shitto is back 😭😭😭”

Star Wars has never shied away from stupid names that make no sense but compel us either way. For crying out loud, we’ve got characters in this franchise called Kit Fisto and Sy Snootles. Even the most serious Star Wars out there, Andor, can’t resist names like Keef Girgo.

Yet while Star Wars is a deeply unserious franchise that loves to make fun of itself, the term “Glup Shitto” has been used less to prod at Star Wars’ terrible naming conventions and more used to refer to obscure characters that only a certain sector of fans recognize. For example, remember Jo from Freetown, first introduced in The Mandalorian and later in The Book of Boba Fett? No? Well, neither does anyone else, but I think she’s very cool and would love to see her again. No, she doesn’t have more than five minutes of screen time. Why do you ask?

Scorn and Icarus just sound so edgy. It’s almost inevitable that, even if they only get a few minutes of screen time in Maul: Shadow Lord, something (like a comic or a spin-off novel) will have fans excitedly discussing their return. It’s already happening with the appearance of Marrok, Eleventh Brother, and Mandalorian warrior Rook Kast, with Kast first appearing in the 2014 comic book, Darth Maul — Son of Dathomir.

If the idea of Star Wars fans being stoked to see an obscure character sounds ridiculous, that’s because it is. However, getting hyped over random Glup Shittos is what unites Star Wars fans, and for a community so often divided, that’s never a bad thing.
