Stephen Colbert’s Emmy Quip on His Show’s Fate Sparks Big Reaction

14 September 20252 Mins Read

The audience at the 2025 Emmy Awards showed their support of Stephen Colbert at the 2025 Emmy Awards when he walked on stage as everyone gave the late night host a standing ovation.

Jake Gyllenhaal, Walter Goggins, Parker Posey and more stood up for Colbert before he made a joke about the recent cancellation of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.

“While I have your attention, is anyone hiring?” he asked the audience. “Because I’ve got 200 very well-qualified candidates with me here tonight who will be available in June.”

He continued, “I also brought my own resume here tonight. I haven’t had a chance to update my headshot in a bit, but I think it still works. I only have the one … Harrison Ford, could you get this to [Steven] Spielberg?”

Colbert then jogged off stage to hand the paper to Ford.

On July 17, CBS announced that The Late Show with Stephen Colbert would end in May 2026, after its eleventh season. The network said the decision was “purely a financial decision,” and pointed to broader economic challenges in late-night TV, including declining ad revenue and changing viewer habits. Colbert confirmed he was told the news shortly before the public announcement, and he emphasized that neither it nor his audience would be replaced and that the show would end altogether.

“This is purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night,” CBS executives added in their statement. “It is not related in any way to the show’s performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount. Our admiration, affection, and respect for the talents of Stephen Colbert and his incredible team made this agonizing decision even more difficult. Stephen has taken CBS late night by storm with cutting-edge comedy, a must-watch monologue and interviews with leaders in entertainment, politics, news and newsmakers across all areas. The show has been #1 in late night for nine straight seasons; Stephen’s comedy resonates daily across digital and social media; and the broadcast is a staple of the nation’s zeitgeist.”

Since then, several people have speculated that Colbert’s opinions on the current administration may have played a part in his show getting canceled.
