Steve Martin Cancels Comedy Shows at the Last Minute Due to Illness: 'I Can't Possibly Do the Shows That You Deserve'

Steve Martin abruptly canceled multiple comedy shows over illness: COVID-19.

On Friday, Sept. 19, the Father of the Bride icon took to Instagram to announce that he and Martin Short would be unable to perform that night and the following day.

“Dear Virginia Beach and Richmond. Sadly, I have come down with Covid. I can’t possibly do the shows that you deserve,” Martin revealed. “So Marty and I must cancel tonight & tomorrow. But we will return under better circumstances.😔.”

In the comments, fans expressed their disappointment but understood the situation was out of the Only Murders in the Building star’s control.

One Instagram user wrote, “Oh my, Steve Martin! Please take care of yourself!! We have plenty of old videos of you to keep us laughing until you are better. Be well.”

Another follower shared, “Sending healing vibes. Trust science and your fellow detectives. Rest and recuperate, counting down the days until your show in Indiana.”

Someone else wrote, “Get better soon! When you are feeling better please look for another streaming service for OMITB besides HULU/Disney for Season 6,” referencing the boycotts over Disney+ and Hulu in the wake of ABC suspending Jimmy Kimmel Live! “indefinitely” after host Jimmy Kimmel‘s comments following Charlie Kirk‘s death.

A different fan echoed, “Feel better soon. Unfortunately I had to cancel my Disney subscription and I’m going to miss the rest of OMITB…let me know when you solve the murders 😭.”

Meanwhile, yet another Instagram user commented, “Get well soon, Mr. Martin. Love and hugs for you.❤️.”

Martin’s website confirmed the late-minute comedy show cancellations, writing, “Unfortunately, Steve Martin has come down with COVID, and out of an abundance of caution, the shows will be canceled. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Refunds will be available to ticket buyers.”

Later that day, Martin proved that he tested positive for COVID-19 by posting a photo of his test. “Hey! No flu!” he joked.

Josh Gad commented, “Feel better,” as countless other Instagram followers sent their well-wishes, too. In July, the Frozen star was similarly forced to drop out of performances of Jesus Christ Superstar after testing positive for COVID-19.

This isn’t the first time Martin and Short were forced to cancel their comedy show over COVID-19. In February, he shared that Short tested positive after attending SNL50: The Anniversary Special.

In February, Martin revealed that Short had contracted COVID after attending the SNL50: The Anniversary Special. He said Maya Rudolph had also. “Maya came down with Covid, (she did NOT come to the show with it!) Marty came down with it. The SNL 50th Covid curse is real,” he wrote on Instagram. “Unfortunately, we have to reschedule this weekend’s sold out Durham and Knoxville dates.”

Martin and Short’s next scheduled comedy tour date is on Saturday, Oct. 4, in Hollywood, Fla.
