New research shows that European corporate travel managers face challenges with data access, complex fee structures, and inefficient processes, prompting a shift toward programme simplification and integrated technology solutions.
A new study by Navan, in partnership with temoji, surveyed 120 corporate travel managers across the UK and Europe and found that 42% cannot easily access the data they need, and only 16% feel they are using available data “extremely well” to drive results. The report, “5 Ways to Uplevel Travel Management,” identifies areas where businesses can unlock value by moving from complex legacy systems to more intuitive, integrated platforms.
The survey found that 60% of travel managers are prioritizing simplification in 2026 to address cumbersome workflows, with 44% referencing inefficient processes in their current programmes. Additionally, 66% must defend travel management company (TMC) fees to finance teams, but 42% find pricing models too opaque to explain. The report also notes that 36% of off-platform bookings are driven by lower prices, and limited access to travel inventory and competitive rates has reduced traveler confidence in TMC bookings by 15%.
Ian Jones, consultant at temoji, said the research shows travel managers want simplified processes and clearer fee models to better position their travel programmes within their businesses. Kim Hamer, chief travel advisory officer at Navan, said that by embracing AI, demanding transparent pricing, and choosing consumer-grade booking tools, travel managers can shift from administrative tasks to providing strategic value.
The report outlines several strategies for building successful, high-adoption travel programmes. Recommendations include moving from opaque fee models to simple, transparent structures to enhance cost visibility; improving the booking experience with robust inventory; replacing manual approvals with automated workflows; and unifying travel and expense management to enable real-time forecasting and sharper decision-making.
The data was collected from a survey of 120 corporate travel managers across the UK and Europe conducted in October and November 2025, along with in-depth interviews and a design thinking workshop with industry leaders in London.
