Superman’s big Easter egg is now a DC hero guessing game

25 July 20252 Mins Read

Director James Gunn’s Superman has been a hit, hailed for swerving in a different direction than most comic book blockbusters. As our review puts it, “Gunn knows how to locate the human frailty in big-budget behemoths without weighing them down.” The movie spotlights everything from the tenderness of its hero to the complex Lois Lane.

Being a comic book movie, it’s also dotted with easter eggs, cameos, and references for hardcore fans to eat up. Perhaps its biggest easter egg is the mural that shows up in the Justice Gang’s Hall of Justice, the headquarters for Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl, and Mr. Terrific. Viewers don’t get the best glimpses at it in the film, but the director shared its artwork in full on Friday to give fans a better view.

The 26 characters in the mural are a “who’s who” of deep cuts from DC history and lore. We’ve spotted a few ourselves, like Ms. Liberty on the horse, The Sandman holding the gun (unrelated to the Neil Gaiman character), Liberty Belle, Amazing Man, Zatara (father of Zatanna), and Wildcat. The mural also depict Sean Gunn’s Maxwell Lord, who funds the Justice Gang. He’s mentioned a few times in the film and cameos at the end, but expect him the play a larger role as the DCU develops. He and the Justice Gang are next slated to appear in Peacemaker season two.

There’s a lot to dig into here in the mural, especially how it relates the 300 years of metahuman history in the burgeoning DCU. One fan asked on X if it was canon, likely meaning if all the characters featured were real metahuman heroes in the DCU. Gunn, not to be tripped up, only stated, “It’s canon that this is a mural in the Hall of Justice, yes.” Other users in his replies threw out their guesses as to who’s featured, while one asked Grok to do their work for them (lame). Another wrote, “We need a solo movie about Zatanna and her father ASAP, James!” and I’m hard-pressed to agree.

Let us know in the comments who you spot in the mural, and why you agree that Zatanna needs a movie pronto.
