Survey: 79% of Quebecers regularly sacrifice sleep due to hustle culture and sleep shaming, Life in canada

4 July 20252 Mins Read

According to a recent survey conducted in Quebec by Dormez-vous, Quebecers have conflicting feelings about sleep.

On one hand, 95% acknowledge getting enough sleep as a crucial factor in maintaining overall wellness. On the other hand, 79% revealed that they frequently sacrifice their sleep for work commitments, social obligations, cultural expectations, hobbies and more. So what gives?

You could be looking at the effect of sleep shaming. Defined as feeling guilt or embarrassment over sleep habits like going to bed early, sleeping in or prioritizing rest over hustle, sleep shaming was experienced by more than half of Quebecers according to Dormez-vous’ survey results.

Ultimately, sleep shaming makes you feel you should be 100% productive with as little rest as possible. But one bad night’s sleep quickly reveals the shakiness of this premise.

Without a good night’s sleep, 74% of Quebecers say they experience low energy levels, while two-thirds (66%) say it greatly impacts their moods. In short, it’s hard to hustle on a bad night’s rest.

March is Sleep Awareness Month, and Dormez-vous wants you to embrace sleep as something to celebrate, not feel guilty about. After all, what’s the point of squeezing productivity out of every waking second if you don’t take the time to recover?

Whether you hit the hay early, take that lunchtime nap or unashamedly commit to sleeping in, you’re helping #StopSleepShaming while catching up on some well-deserved sleep time yourself this month and beyond.
