Survey Finds UK Holidaymakers Shift to European Destinations and Last-Minute Bookings for Summer 2026

Travel Booking Trends Shift After Middle East Conflict

A recent survey by ABTA – The Travel Association – shows significant changes in how UK travellers are planning their summer holidays. The conflict in the Middle East has influenced both destination choices and booking habits. According to the survey, 31% of UK adults are now more likely to book holidays through travel professionals compared to before the conflict. The main reasons cited include the professionals’ knowledge (53%), expertise (44%), and the perceived security of package holidays (41%).

Additionally, 27% of respondents are more likely to choose package holidays. The most common motivations for this preference are having all aspects of the trip managed (52%), the right to a refund or replacement if the holiday cannot proceed (48%), and value for money (38%).

Short-Haul Destinations Dominate Summer Plans

The survey found that 84% of UK adults planning to travel abroad in the next 12 months are choosing short-haul destinations, primarily within Europe. This trend is attributed to ongoing disruptions in flight routes through the Middle East, which have not yet returned to pre-conflict levels. Many travel professionals are redirecting clients to alternative destinations or routes.

Spain is the top choice among those considering a holiday abroad this summer, with 38% planning to travel there. Italy and France are the next most popular destinations, attracting 23% and 19% of prospective travellers, respectively. Other European countries in the top ten include Greece (18%), Portugal (15%), Germany (9%), and Turkey (8%).

Long-Haul Travel Remains, but at Lower Levels

While short-haul travel is the predominant choice, some UK travellers still plan to visit destinations further afield. The United States is the most popular long-haul destination, with 13% of respondents planning a trip there. Australia and Japan are also among the top ten, each attracting 6% of those considering overseas travel this summer. Norway also appears in the top ten, with 6% of respondents planning a visit.

Increase in Last-Minute Bookings

Booking patterns have shifted, with a notable increase in last-minute holiday arrangements. Of those considering a holiday abroad during summer 2026, 30% plan to book their trips only 2-4 weeks before departure. An additional 10% expect to book less than two weeks in advance. This trend is linked to uncertainty over prices, ongoing global events, and the wider cost of living.

Survey Methodology and Data

The findings are based on a survey conducted by The Nursery Research and Planning for ABTA, with a nationally representative sample of 2,000 UK adults. The survey was carried out between 8 May and 19 May 2026. Data on intended destinations covers all respondents planning a holiday abroad between May and September 2026.

Most Popular Destinations for UK Travellers

The top destinations for UK adults planning to travel abroad in the next 12 months are as follows:

Country % of UK adults
Spain 38%
Italy 23%
France 19%
Greece 18%
Portugal 15%
USA 13%
Germany 9%
Turkey 8%
Norway 6%
Australia 6%
Japan 6%

Conclusion

The ongoing conflict in the Middle East has led to changes in UK holidaymakers’ behaviour, with a clear move toward short-haul European destinations, increased reliance on travel professionals, and a rise in last-minute bookings. The survey data suggests these trends are likely to continue as travellers respond to evolving global events and travel advisories.
