Sweden Officially Has The World’s Most Powerful Passport For 2026, According to the Global Passport Index, Canada Reviews

30 June 20262 Mins Read

Most of us have only ever held one, maybe two, passports in our lifetimes. But across the planet, passports vary enormously in the power they hold and the advantages they grant their holders.

The Henley Passport Index is the biggest and most well-known passport ranking, released quarterly based on how many visa-free entries each passport grants its holder. However, the Global Passport Index, released once a year, assesses three core criteria to compile its list – and the latest ranking has just landed.

Alongside mobility access (the number of visa-free entries each passport allows), it analyses investment attractiveness (tax environment and economic competitiveness), as well as the quality of life (healthcare and social infrastructure) behind each passport.

The most powerful passport, according to this criteria, is Sweden, which ranks 11th for mobility, ninth for investment, but an impressive second overall for quality of life.

Europe – specifically the northern region comprising the Nordics and the British Isles – claimed nine of the top 10 spots, and the margins between each are extremely narrow.

Switzerland came second overall as well as in the investment category, and Finland claimed third in the ranking, but fourth in mobility and first in quality of life. Singapore ranked 115th for quality of life, but thanks to first-place positions for mobility (as also reflected in the Henley Passport Index) and investment, it clinched tenth place overall.

The world’s top 10 passports, according to the Global Passport Index

  1. Sweden
  2. Switzerland
  3. Finland
  4. Germany
  5. Netherlands
  6. Denmark
  7. Ireland
  8. UK
  9. Norway
  10. Singapore

Which countries are missing from the top 10?

Considering it claimed first place in 2021, you might be surprised not to see the USA. Five years ago, an American passport gained the highest score in this index’s history, but it has since suffered the steepest five-year decline of any G7 country, plummeting to 14th in 2025 and recovering only slightly to 12th place in 2026.
