Sweet Magnolias fans had a bit of a wait, but they finally got confirmation that season 5 was a go in late April 2025. As we’d reported ahead of its big renewal, a writers’ room had already been long established, so that if a renewal came, production could get going speedily because, as we’ve discussed before, the longer fans have to wait for a returning show, the more likely they are to fall away. Thankfully, news came in overnight that production is due to begin in just a few weeks in June, meaning that we will be heading back to Serenity in 2026.
Filming on the new season will primarily continue in Atlanta, Georgia, as per all prior seasons. We don’t know yet whether or how much filming will take place in New York this season, or whether they’ll fake it altogether. As you may know (spoiler alert!) Maddie announced in the back half of season 4 that she’d be moving to the Big Apple for a new publishing job. There are also rumors that a time jump may be on the way next season as the teenagers in the story head off to college.
The series continues to have a modest budget, with episodes ranging from $3 to $5M, but when will cameras begin rolling? New production listings suggest that filming will get underway on June 2nd, 2025, and run for around three and a half months through September 17th, 2025, as the tentative wrap date. As always, production dates can shift and are not set in stone.
Who’s working on Sweet Magnolias season 5?
Sheryl J. Anderson continues to showrun the Netflix series, reacting to the recent renewal by posting on social media, “Blessed and thrilled to be going back to Serenity with some of my favorite people in the world. We will work hard but joyously to bring you another season to fill your hearts and lift your spirits. Feel free to pour it out in the meantime!”

Sticking with Instagram, there have been a few other small developments on Sweet Magnolias there. On April 24th, writer Abdi Nazemian confirmed he has joined the writer’s room for the upcoming fifth season, saying, “I had the privilege of joining the writers’ room for the fifth season of SWEET MAGNOLIAS. Raising a margarita glass of gratitude to our showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson for welcoming me into the warm world of Serenity, and to the team of writers with whom I spent months collaborating for the laughter and support,” continuing to thank the other writers on board for season 5: Kale Futterman, Barret Mindell Helms, Sara Jumel, Alex Rubin, and Quincy Cho.
Cho is a newcomer to the show, writing on Instagram that she’s a “Writers’ Room Assistant” for season 5 but added, “I will also be writing my first episode of TV on this show.” Responding to the post, Anderson said, “I knew you were amazing the moment I met you, and I am so thrilled we persuaded you to come to Serenity!!! You filled the room with light, your script pulsates with warmth and humor, and you upped everyone’s emoji game!!! ”
Per the WGA, Michelle Denise Jackson will be the supervising producer, and Kale Futterman will be the executive story editor in season 5.
