During an interview on The Jennifer Hudson Show on Friday, March 21, the Grammy-winning “Kill Bill” singer appeared as a guest and Jennifer Hudson noted that she was seen speaking with Swift at the Grammys. “Do you guys exchange advice? Do you get inspired by each other? How does that work?” Hudson asked.
“It’s so interesting to me. Every time she walks up to me or approaches me, I’m always like, ‘All right, this is happening.’ Because that’s fully Taylor Swift,” SZA said.
“I think I mentioned that I would love to write with her and love to build some things together,” she told Hudson. “I love her storytelling. And she was open to it. I think she’s awesome. She’s so bossed up.”
Hudson said that such a collab would be “amazing.” SZA went on to shout out some other artists she admires for their “storytelling.”
“I love storytelling,” she said. “There’s something about that type of storytelling—Gracie Abrams, Lola Young, Doechii, Olivia Rodrigo. There’s a lot of storytelling—Chappell Roan. There’s a lot of deep storytelling that really reflects their human experience and I respect that. I’m just trying to dive deeper into the human experience, child.”
SZA also spoke about working with Lamar, who she is set to tour next month through June. “I’m really excited to learn from him. I learn the most I feel like by observing him,” she said. “So like watching him, a cumulative amount of performances and then I get to pick different tips,” she explained. “Watch how he carries himself. How he emotes. I can ask questions but there’s some things you can’t explain when there’s magic happening. To watch him perform is to witness something magical.”
Interestingly, Lamar hasn’t only collaborated with SZA, he’s also worked with Swift. He appeared on the 2015 remix of her song “Bad Blood,” originally featured on the album 1989. A re-recorded version of the remix also appeared on the 2023 album 1989 (Taylor’s Version).
